Lagarde sells 70% of its grapes and keeps only its best to make its house wine. Their oldest wines planted over one hundred years ago are so dense that tractors can not work the vines so it is still done with the traditional horse and cart. For the premium wines yields are no more than 2.2 to
3.3 lbs per plant. Most of the vines are low-VSP-trained and furrow irrigated. They have Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Petit Verdot, Syrah, Viogner, Tempranillo, Pinot Noir and Moscato Giallo. Of their 500 oak barrels 80% are French and the rest American. They are also experimenting with Eastern European wood. New oak barrels are used for their Henry line and it’s aged for 2 years before blending.
