Salta
Salta
is home to the highest altitude vineyards in
Argentina, vines are planted
between 1,500-
3,000
meters above sea level. Containing only
4,000 ha (
9,885 acres) of planted
vines or 2% of Argentina’s total it is not as internationally recognized as
Mendoza but still has a lot to offer any wine tourist.
One of the
few places in
Argentina
where Spanish colonial architecture has survived,
Salta
has a magical combination of old architecture and breathtaking desert
landscapes making them some of the most beautiful vineyards in
South America. With over 340 days of sunshine per year
and little rainfall irrigation is a necessity and water is drawn from
underground springs. Due to high altitude as in the
UCO
Valley in
Mendoza there is a big difference between day
and night time temperatures. This gives thicker skins leads to deep, bright colored
wines with explosive fruits.
Salta
has also become renowned for the
Torrontés grapes grown being the only place in the world where it grows.
Torrontés is characterized by fruity and aromatic aromas and a trip to
Salta is not compete
without sampling at least a few bottles.
